Misc Tips for Content Makers and SW
In no particular order, some bits and bobs I’ve picked up along the way.
DO NOT LINK ACCOUNTS
Unless you know it’s safe.
For example, you might be able to link your Spotify to your platform, but if you do, do people on the platform see the account name of your Spotify? If they can, is it a name you want them to see?
FB/Insta and TikTok
Seem to talk to each other.
To what extent, is not clear, HOWEVER, if you have ANY of them, be very careful as you might out yourself.
Thank God Twitter doesn’t share (yet, dun dun DUN! Oh I hope not).
Also, all three are so desperate to social graph you that if they use your location, they could start suggesting nearby randoms. And in our business, not what you want.
IMO, have none of them. If you have to, DO NOT have them on a work device.
Use ManyVids as a DMCA enforcer (so I’m told, do check)
Put all your vids on MV, and if you find them on tubes etc, you can get MV to issue the takedown. It’s always good to have a big MFer on your side
Do Not Shoot in AIRBnB
AIRBnB have a reputation for blacklisting people who they discover have been shooting porn in their properties, (I’d guess the same applies to SW). Blacklist is FOREVER, and global.
If, like me, AIRBnB is your GOTO for actual travel, it’s not worth the risk, esp since there are so many other ways to book places, with organisations that just don’t care. (Pretty much every other commercial booking service, so long as no one complains and you leave it clean and tidy).
Also, this why Location Releases are probably going to become a thing. (See other articles).
Network Locally
Set up a group for local creators and organise working together. Even you just film each other solo, the fact that it’s someone else opens up camera moves (if you usually use a tripod) and different styles (new pairs of eyes).
Fuck, just have a weekly coffee morning.
Muse.ai
Video storage and distribution. Legal adult allowed. Fee basis is per minute watched, at roughly $1 per 600mins.
BUT, assumes you have a file sizes of 1GB per hour. In which case it’s comparable to AWS.
HOWEVER – Uncompressed normal HD runs at 6GB per hour, Full HD about 9GB per hour and Ultra HD or 4K, about 18GB. VR runs between 10-20GB per hour.
To get the most out of it, you’ll need to be good at optimizing video file sizes.
Wormhole.app
Alternative to Dropbox and WeTransfer for sending big files.
FREE – 10GB limit at any time, (so, add more files as the file links expire, so, can shift huge volumes over a few days).
File transfer – creates a URL that you email to someone, or lots of people. URL expires in 24 hours.
They then download.
If they “download all”, it downloads to a local zip.
If they download one at a time, they get the raw file locally.
Signal – the encrypted messaging app, for PAYMENTS
Ok, very much an experiment at the moment – details here – and right now you need to be a Uk Resident with a UK mobile number and NOT a US citizen. (Yanks, write to your Congressman, this is clearly a US regulations issue).
It also only deals with MobileCoin. Getting MobileCoin is still very much a crypto enthusiast thing, so, no, no customers have it. Yet.
My understanding of MobileCoin is that it’s designed to be a sort of “small change” money. You keep your savings in Bitcoin, but every now and then turn some bucks into MobileCoin for spending.
Possibly Signal might add other currencies for those less worried about privacy – eg a Lightning wallet for BTC could be nice.
The FUTURE however – I’m going to assume that Signal will need to follow UK regs at some point, so either your personal info will be needed, like for a bank account, or such requirements will be activity triggered based on turnover or balances, and really aimed at drug dealers.
GOOD NEWS – SW, inc FSSW, is legal in the UK and Signal’s people are very freedom focussed. I can’t see them trying to stop SW or FSSW people enjoying using their product.
